  2.                  Installation and Startup Guide

  4. This guide covers installation and startup of OASIS for Windows.
  5. The complete User's Guide is built into the program and is
  6. accessed by selecting the "Help" option.  In order to get the
  7. most benefit from this program, we strongly suggest that you read
  8. the user's guide.
  9.  
  10. What is OASIS?
  11.  
  12.      OASIS (OWL Automated Sales and Invoicing System) is a
  13.      complete sales management system that includes: invoicing,
  14.      automated billing, customer correspondence, mailing list
  15.      management, and sales tracking.  OASIS Features:
  16.      
  17.      *    Intuitive menus that minimize typing.  For example, to
  18.           create an invoice you simply choose the customer and
  19.           products sold from a series of menus.  OASIS fills in
  20.           the invoice and computes the sales tax for you.
  21.      *    Customer tracking.  Customer profile reports show each
  22.           customer, the items they have purchased and the dates
  23.           each item was purchased.
  24.      *    Sales tracking.  Product sales reports give a complete
  25.           picture of the products that are selling and those that
  26.           are not.  The Buyers report shows you the names of
  27.           customers who have purchased a particular product.
  28.      *    Mailing list management.  Customers can be separated
  29.           into up to 100 groups. Mailing labels and mail merge
  30.           files can be generated for any combination of one or
  31.           more groups of customers.  This feature lets you target
  32.           your mass mailings to just those customers who are most
  33.           likely to respond to a given mailing.
  34.      *    OASIS can be configured to automatically compute two
  35.           sales taxes (e.g., Canadian GST and PST).
  36.      *    Income data entered into OASIS can be imported into OWL
  37.           Basic Bookkeeping to provide complete tracking of both
  38.           sales income and business expenses.

  40. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  41.  
  42.      OASIS requires Microsoft Windows 3.1 or above, a hard disk
  43.      and 4 MB of memory.
  44.  
  45. UPGRADING FROM OASIS for DOS.
  46.  
  47.      The Upgrade Data option under File/Setup converts OASIS for
  48.      DOS data for use with OASIS for Windows.  When installing
  49.      OASIS for Windows, DO NOT install it in the same directory
  50.      where your DOS version of OASIS is installed.
  51.      
  52. REINSTALLING OASIS FOR WINDOWS.
  53.  
  54.      Before reinstalling this version use your present version of
  55.      OASIS for Windows to make a backup disk of your data. In the
  56.      File menu choose the Backup Data option to make the backup
  57.      disk.  After you reinstall OASIS for Windows choose the
  58.      Restore Data option to restore your data.

  60. INSTALLATION
  61.  
  62.      If you downloaded OWL Basic Bookkeeping from an on-line
  63.      source, you should first create an installation floppy disk
  64.      containing the following files.
  65.

  67.      cust2.dbt      groups.db_     inv.db_        inv.dbt
  68.      itm4.db_       labels.db_     pmt.db_        prod4.db_

  73.      The easiest way to create an installation floppy disk is by
  74.      decompressing the downloaded archive file to a floppy disk.
  75.      
  76.      To install OASIS for Windows, use the Program Manager or
  77.      File Manager to run INSTALL.EXE.  For example, if you are
  78.      installing from drive A:
  79.      
  80.           1.   From the Program Manager File menu, choose Run.
  81.                If you are running Windows 95, choose Run from the
  82.                start menu.
  83.           2.   In the Run dialog box, type A:INSTALL and choose
  84.                OK.
  85.      
  86.      The install program will allow you to select the drive and
  87.      directory where OASIS will be installed.  The default is
  88.      C:\OWL_BUS.  If you are reinstalling OASIS for Windows or
  89.      installing an updated version of OASIS for windows, use the
  90.      same directory where you originally installed the program.
  91.      
  92.      The install program checks to see if a file with the same
  93.      name already exists before writing files to your hard disk.
  94.      If there is another file with the same name, a message is
  95.      displayed similar to:

  111.      Click on "Yes" ONLY if the source file is newer than the
  112.      Target File.
  113.      
  114.      The Install program creates a program group named "OWL
  115.      Business Apps" with icons for OASIS, the OASIS User's Guide,
  116.      and OASIS README.

  118. RUNNING THE PROGRAM
  119.  
  120.      The data files shipped with the program are empty.  The
  121.      Getting Started section of the User's Guide contains a step-
  122.      by-step guide to program setup and creating your first
  123.      invoice.  To view this information double click the OASIS
  124.      User's Guide icon then select Program Setup under Getting
  125.      Started from the Table of Contents.

  127. TECHNICAL SUPPORT
  128.      
  129.      If you are unable to resolve a question or you have
  130.      difficulty running OASIS, please call us or send us a letter
  131.      describing the problem.  Include the exact text of the error
  132.      message (if any) and a complete description of the problem,
  133.      your computer system (computer, memory, graphics card, DOS
  134.      and Windows version, contents of CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT
  135.      files, etc.), the option you were running when the error
  136.      occurred and any supplemental data that you entered under
  137.      the option.  If possible, please also include a disk created
  138.      using the File/Backup Data option (your data will be held in
  139.      strict confidence).  We will investigate the problem and
  140.      respond as quickly as possible.
